Friedrich Krupp's Story
Early Life and Big Dreams
Friedrich Krupp's father passed away when he was young. His grandmother, Helene Amalie Krupp, raised him. In 1800, she bought a factory called Sterkrade Works.
Friedrich had a big goal: to make cast steel. At that time, the secret to making this strong steel was kept hidden in England. He wanted to discover how to make it in Germany.
Working Towards His Goal
Friedrich started his experiments at Sterkrade Works. He worked with an engineer named Gottlob Jacobs. Even after the factory was sold in 1808, Friedrich kept trying on his own in Essen.
In 1810, he opened a small forging plant near Essen. A few years later, in 1815, he teamed up with Friedrich Nicolai. They worked together to produce cast steel.
Challenges and Successes
Their cast steel was very good. It was perfect for things like coin dies and stamps for buttons. However, there wasn't enough demand for it. The factory struggled to stay open.
After 1820, Friedrich had to move out of his house. He moved into a small worker's cottage near his plant. This little hut was kept for a long time, even as the Krupp factories grew huge.
A Family Legacy
Friedrich Krupp died in 1826. Before he passed away, he shared his secret for making cast steel with his son, Alfred. Alfred then took over the business.
Alfred Krupp successfully developed the steel-making process. His mother, Therese Krupp, also helped run the business after Friedrich's death. This laid the foundation for the huge Krupp industrial empire.
