Frigga Carlberg (born Anna Fredrika Lundgren on August 10, 1851 – died October 3, 1925) was an important Swedish woman. She was a writer, a social worker, and a feminist. This means she worked to help people in need and fought for equal rights for women. Frigga was also a strong supporter of women getting the right to vote. She was a key leader in the National Association for Women's Suffrage from 1903 to 1921. She also led the Gothenburg branch of the Swedish Society for Woman Suffrage from 1902 to 1921.

About Frigga Carlberg

Frigga Carlberg was born in Falkenberg, Sweden. Her family was wealthy. However, it was hard for her to convince her father to let her study.

In 1876, she married Andreas Carlberg. He worked for the post office. After they married, they moved to Gothenburg.

When Frigga arrived in Gothenburg, she started working on women's issues. She also did a lot of social work. She became an important member of the Gothenburg's Women's Association. This group was started in 1884. It was the first women's association in Gothenburg.

Frigga also started an organization called Sällskapet Myrornas barnhem. This group helped find homes for healthy children whose parents had tuberculosis. She also led a group for women who were social workers. She joined the Swedish Poor Care Association too.

Fighting for Women's Right to Vote

Frigga Carlberg became a very important person for women in Gothenburg. She was involved in social and political groups. In 1902, the Swedish Society for Woman Suffrage was created. This group worked to get women the right to vote. Frigga helped start the Gothenburg part of this group. She was its leader for its entire existence.

She knew a lot about the women's suffrage movements in Britain and America. She even invited the famous English suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst to give a speech. Frigga also went to many international meetings about women's right to vote. She first went as a member of the Swedish Society for Woman Suffrage. Later, in 1923, she went to Rome as a representative for the Swedish government.

Her Work as a Writer

Frigga Carlberg wrote novels and plays. In her writing, she talked about issues important to women. She also wrote about how poor people lived. Her stories helped influence new policies and laws.

Her novel, För rättfärdighets skull (1918), is very well-known. It is considered one of the most important novels from the Swedish suffrage movement. Another famous novel from that time is Pennskaftet (1910) by Elin Wägner.

Awards and Recognition

In 1921, Frigga Carlberg received the Illis quorum award. This is a special medal given by the Swedish government. It recognizes people for their important contributions to Swedish culture, science, or society.
