Frik (Armenian: Ֆրիկ) was an Armenian poet who lived a long time ago. He was alive during the 13th and 14th centuries. Frik wrote poems about everyday life and also about religious ideas. Many of his poems pointed out problems in society. He often wrote about how he believed fate was controlled by God.

Who Was Frik?

Frik lived from about 1230 to 1310. This was a time when the Mongols ruled over Armenia. We don't know much about his personal life. We are not even sure if Frik was his real name. It might have been a nickname or a shorter version of his actual name.

People believe Frik was a well-educated person. He might have been wealthy at one point. But he later faced many difficulties, like losing money. Some stories say his son was taken by the Mongols. Frik then traveled all over the kingdom looking for him. He spent his last years living in a monastery. However, we don't know if he officially became a monk.

Frik's Amazing Poems

More than 50 of Frik's poems are still around today. He wrote his poems about daily life in a simple, spoken language. His religious poems used a more formal Armenian language. But he still added some everyday words and words from other languages.

What Frik Wrote About

Many of Frik's poems talked about important issues. He often criticized the Mongol rulers. He also spoke out against wealthy people and some church leaders. Frik wrote about social inequality and unfairness. Sometimes he even used humor to make his points.

Two of his most famous poems are "Complaint to Christ" and "Against Fate." In these poems, Frik thought deeply about his religious faith. He wondered why people who called themselves Christians didn't always act kindly. Frik was a very religious person. But his poems questioned how a fair God could allow so much unfairness and sadness in the world.

Frik's poems were very popular until the 16th century. People became interested in his work again in the late 1800s. The first collection of his poems was published in 1930.
