Frog City, Rhode Island facts for kids

Frog City, Rhode Island is a small village. It's not actually a city, even though its name might make you think so! This village is located inside Johnston, Rhode Island, and it's also part of another village called Thornton, Rhode Island.

People believe Frog City got its name because of the many frogs living near the Pocasset River and the ponds close to Victoria Mill. This area was bordered by Mill Street to the north, Plainfield Street to the east and south, and Rachela Street to the west.

Mills and Industry in Frog City

Frog City was an important place for factories, especially textile mills, in the late 1800s. These mills helped the area grow and provided jobs for many people.

British Hosiery Mill

In 1884, a factory called the British Hosiery Mill was built in Frog City. A hosiery mill makes things like socks and stockings. This mill later changed its name to the Priscilla Worsted Mill.

Victoria Mill

The Victoria Mill, located on John Street, was the biggest factory in the Frog City area. Mills like these were very important for the economy of Rhode Island during that time. They produced fabrics and other goods that were sold all over the country.
