Frontera Comalapa is a town and a special area called a municipality in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. It covers about 718 square kilometers (277 square miles).

In 2010, about 67,012 people lived in the municipality. This was more than the 52,168 people who lived there in 2005. The main city, also called Frontera Comalapa, had a population of 18,704 in 2010.

Besides the main city, the municipality has many smaller communities. Some of the larger ones include Paso Hondo, Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Verapaz, and Doctor Rodulfo Figueroa. These communities are either considered urban (like a city) or rural (like the countryside).

History of Frontera Comalapa

Ancient Discoveries in the Area

In March 2012, something very interesting was found in a cave on a ranch in Frontera Comalapa. Authorities discovered the remains of at least 167 people. After studying them, experts found that these remains were very old, dating back to a time before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas. They were from between the years 700 and 1200.

There were no clear signs of violence on the remains. This led officials to believe that the cave was used as a cemetery a long, long time ago. Along with the human remains, several ancient clay objects were also found. These discoveries help us learn more about the people who lived in this area centuries ago.

Local Government and Community Feedback

Sometimes, local leaders face challenges and criticism. In January 2021, a former mayor of Frontera Comalapa, Irán Mérida Matamoros, was arrested. He faced charges related to misusing public money and not doing his job properly. He was one of several former mayors in Chiapas arrested for similar reasons.

Later that same month, the current mayor, Oscar Armando Ramírez Aguilar, faced strong criticism from the community. People were very unhappy with a public project, a water tank, that was supposed to be fixed but still leaked. This shows how important it is for public projects to be done well for the community.
