Frumar facts for kids
Frumar (also known as Frumarius) was a leader of the Suevi people who lived a long time ago. He became a leader in 460 AD, after the previous leader, Maldras, died. Frumar led a group of Suevi who were active in a region called Lusitania (which is now part of Portugal and Spain). He might have also been trying to become the main leader of all the Suevi, possibly competing with another leader named Rechimund who was in Gallaecia (another region in Spain). Frumar died in 464 AD.
Frumar's Time as Leader
In 460 AD, some important Roman nobles, Ospinio and Ascanius, helped to make a Visigothic army leave the area where Frumar's Suevi were. Later that same year, Frumar attacked the town of Aquae Flaviae (which is now Chaves in Portugal). Some Romans helped him do this.
During this time, Frumar captured a religious leader and writer named Hydatius. He held Hydatius for three months. Even though Ospinio and Ascanius asked him to let Hydatius go, Frumar did not release him right away. Eventually, Hydatius was set free. Over time, the important Roman families in western Iberia (the area of Spain and Portugal) began to accept the Suevi leaders.
