Early Life and Ambition
Even when he was young, Fu Jiezi enjoyed learning and studying. However, at the age of fourteen, he decided that a life spent only with books was not for him. He put his writing tablets aside, saying that a true hero should seek fame and make a difference in faraway lands, not just stay at home studying. This showed his adventurous spirit and desire to achieve great things.
A Dangerous Mission
The Loulan kingdom was located in a key area along the Silk Road. Its rulers had caused problems for the Han dynasty by harming some Chinese envoys, who were like special messengers. To address these issues, in 77 BC, a powerful general named Huo Guang suggested a bold plan to Emperor Zhao of Han. He proposed sending Fu Jiezi, who was then working as an inspector at the P'ing-lo Palace, to go and handle the Loulan king.
Fu Jiezi bravely volunteered for this dangerous mission. He pretended to be an envoy heading to Ferghana (or Khokand), carrying valuable gifts of gold and silk. He presented these gifts to the King of Loulan, who was very pleased.
Dealing with the King
During a private meeting, Fu Jiezi spoke with the king. Two of Fu Jiezi's guards were with him. They quickly took action to stop the king's harmful rule. The king's noblemen and attendants were very confused and fled.
Fu Jiezi then delivered a strong message from the Han emperor. He announced that the Han emperor had sent him to punish the king for turning against the Han dynasty. He declared that the king's younger brother, Weituqi, who was currently with the Han, should become the new ruler. Fu Jiezi warned everyone that Han troops were on their way and that any resistance would lead to the destruction of their kingdom.
After this event, the Han court officially changed the name of the Loulan kingdom to Shanshan. This showed the Han dynasty's control and influence over the region.
Later Life and Recognition
For his courage and success in this important mission, Fu Jiezi was given the special title of Noble of Yiyang. He passed away in Yuankang in 65 BC. His actions helped secure the Han dynasty's power and protect its interests in the western regions.
