What Happens in Fudge-a-Mania?
Peter's Summer Vacation Plans
Peter Hatcher is not happy about his family's summer plans. They are going to a vacation home in Southwest Harbor, Maine. The worst part? The Tubman family will be staying with them! This means Peter has to spend his summer with his biggest rival, Sheila Tubman.
Fudge's Big Idea
Peter's younger brother, Fudge, is five years old. He is excited about the vacation. Fudge thinks he will marry Sheila to protect himself from "monsters" under his bed. He believes married people share a bed, so he would be safe.
New Friends and Surprises
Fudge's idea about marrying Sheila changes. He meets a new friend named Mitzi Apfel. Mitzi gives him a bottle of her grandmother's "monster spray." This makes Fudge feel safe, and he drops his marriage plans. Peter is surprised to learn that Mitzi is the granddaughter of "Big Apfel," a famous baseball player he admires.
Friends and Crushes
Peter invites his best friend, Jimmy Fargo, to join them. This is a special treat because Peter has to put up with Sheila. But Peter gets annoyed when Jimmy starts spending more time with Sheila. Jimmy feels bad that Sheila's own friend couldn't come. Peter also develops a crush on a teenage librarian named Isobel, who goes by Izzy.
Creative Inspirations
Fudge gets inspired to write his own picture book. He learns about Mitzi's book, "Tell Me a Mitzi." Jimmy's dad, Frank, is a well-known painter. He finds inspiration when the Hatchers' baby, Tootsie, walks across his canvas. Her feet are covered in blue paint! This leads him to create a series of paintings called "Baby Feet."
Unexpected Wedding Bells
In the end, Sheila and Fudge do not get married. But something even more surprising happens! Muriel, Peter and Fudge's grandmother, marries Buzzy Senior, Sheila's grandfather. Peter and Sheila are not happy about this at all. They promise to never get along, even though they are now step-cousins.
