Contents
What Happens in the Story?
In this book, Fudge is still five years old. He starts to become very interested in money. He even becomes a bit greedy about it! This drives his older brother, Peter, who is twelve, a little crazy.
The Trip to Washington, D.C.
To help Fudge understand money better, his family decides to take him on a trip. They go to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. This is where real money is made! The family hopes this visit will help Fudge stop being so obsessed with money.
Meeting the Howie Hatchers
While in Washington, D.C., the Hatchers meet their long-lost cousins. These are the "Howie Hatchers." The family includes Howie, who is a park ranger traveling from Hawaii. There's also his pregnant wife, Eudora. They have two twelve-year-old twin daughters, Flora and Fauna. These twins are sometimes called the "Natural Beauties."
Introducing Mini Hatcher
The Howie Hatchers also have a three-year-old son. His name is Farley Drexel Hatcher. This is the same as Fudge's real name! Peter quickly gives the new cousin the nickname "Mini," and it sticks.
Living Together in New York
After their trip, the Howie Hatchers invite themselves to stay with Peter's family. They move into the Hatcher family's apartment in the Upper West Side of New York City. They plan to stay for several weeks.
Peter's Challenges
Peter has a tough time during all of this. His best friend, Jimmy Fargo, has moved away. Jimmy now lives in SoHo, which is on the other side of Manhattan. Even though they live farther apart, Peter and Jimmy still go to the same school. They are both in the seventh grade. Fudge is in a different group at school, called the Mixed group. He makes a new friend there named Melissa Beth Miller.
The Missing Tooth Incident
Near the end of the story, something funny happens. Mini, the younger cousin, accidentally swallows Fudge's baby tooth! Fudge had just lost the tooth and was planning to get a dollar from the tooth fairy for it. He gets very angry at Mini.
Fudge Learns a Lesson
After the Howie Hatchers leave, Fudge is still upset about his tooth. He tells Peter that he hates Mini. Peter then reminds Fudge of something from an earlier book. He tells Fudge that he felt the same way when Fudge swallowed his pet turtle, Dribble, in Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. Fudge is surprised to hear this. He realizes he hasn't always been a good brother to Peter. He then apologizes for what he did.
