Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fátima Langa (born June 24, 1953 – died June 24, 2017) was a talented writer from Mozambique. She was best known for her exciting stories for young readers. Many of her stories were inspired by her own childhood in southeastern Mozambique. She also started her very own publishing company called Editora Mulheres e Jovens Moçambicanos.

About Fátima Langa's Life

Fátima José Correia Langa was born in 1953. Her birthplace was Bahanine, in the Manjacaze District of what was then called Portuguese Mozambique. She was the oldest of ten children in her family.

When she was very young, Fátima only spoke the Chopi language. She learned Portuguese when she started primary school. She continued her studies in Xai-Xai and later in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique.

How Fátima Became a Writer

Fátima loved telling stories from a young age. She would share tales in her native language around a fire. However, she never thought about publishing them. A famous Mozambican writer, Lília Momplé, encouraged her to write them down.

Fátima began publishing her stories and poems. They appeared in different newspapers and magazines. Her first book, Uma Jibóia no Congelador (which means "A Boa Constrictor in the Freezer"), came out in 2004.

She wrote at least ten children's books. These books often taught important lessons about daily life. She used animal characters that acted like people to show different situations. Her books were published in many local languages. These included Chopi, Makhuwa, Chuwabu, and Makonde. Some were even printed in Braille for visually impaired readers.

Fátima's Education and Projects

With help from the Fundação Fernando Leite Couto, two of Fátima's books became plays. These were Ndinema vai à escola and O gato e o coelho.

In 2010, when she was 57 years old, Fátima went to Eduardo Mondlane University. She earned a bachelor's degree in journalism there.

In 2015, she started her own publishing company. It was called Editora Mulheres e Jovens Moçambicanos (EMUJOMO). This means "Mozambican Women and Youth Publishing." She also helped start Muchefa. This group supports women and children who need help.

Fátima Langa passed away on June 24, 2017. She died on her 64th birthday.
