G.K.Dhas, a distinguished social reformist, who strives hard to transcend the society into a positive one, founded the Mother Teresa Charitable Trust (MTCT) in 1997, after being inspired by the large gathering in the last rite procession of Mother Teresa on 5th September 1997 in Calcutta. This organization was founded to serve the downtrodden, the marginalized and the needy in the society following the footsteps of Mother Teresa the beacon of service. It primarily spreads the philanthropist’s ideals and principles to the whole world.

Politics is one of the important means through which the society can be empowered. With this great vision, G.K.Dhas, the founder of MTCT, involved in politics with a great zeal and zest. He is now the General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu unit of Indian National Congress . “Responsibility of a citizen lies in service to the society” is the motto of this great visionary who works indefatigably, disregarding day and night, for the betterment of the poor.

Early life

He was born in a hamlet namely Melmidalam, in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India, on 11th March 1951. He had his schooling in his village itself. His father G.Kanagappu Nadar,was an agriculturalist and mother G.Chellammal was a home maker. His lovely parents filled the world for him. They nurtured him with righteousness and wisdom. They were his first role models. His four siblings, two brothers and two sisters, have become professionals and teachers. His wife B.Stella, a teacher and his daughter Binuja and Pravin both B.E,MBA, are professionals

Higher education

He was a voracious reader of books he studied B.A.degree at Christian College, Martandam, pursued M.A English Literature at Sagar University, Madhya Pradesh and completed BAL (Law Degree) at Annamalai University.

Employment

After completing his post graduation, he joined a govt. Organization in Chennai and worked in various fields like marketing, Law public distribution, etc. He was appointed as the procurement officer in 1983 with a promise of good salary. But he who had been groomed with a characteristic of righteousness, quitted the post immediately on account of the corrupt system that prevailed in the department. He undertook good many initiatives, desiring to serve the broken humanity; amidst them one such was the foundation of two Nidhi companies. He started them with the help of his friends. Furthermore, the two companies still function and serve people; one is in Kanyakumari and the other one is in Chennai.

Political life

Inspired by the lifestyle of K.Kamaraj, the exemplary and role model Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, known as uneducated ingenious, G.K.Dhas, being a student then with so much eager and enthusiasm, joined the Congress party and vigorously engaged himself in the election campaign of K.Kamaraj in 1969 as well as in 1971 parliament election. He occupied the district level position in the students’ congress.

He settled himself in Chennai in 1974. From dawn to dusk, he was with the general public, discussing his vision with them. He was appointed as the state committee member in the minority wing of the congress party in 1975. Touched by the message proclaimed by late V.P.Singh to eradicate corruption from politics, he joined ‘Jan Morcha’ and became the Tamil Nadu State General Secretary in the year 1986. When Jan Morcha merged with Janatadal, he was declared as one of the State Executive members. Then he was appointed as the secretary and later as General Secretary. When Janatadal was spilited into Janatadal (secular) and Janatadal (united) he opted to the secular party. He has been nominated as Secretary General of Janatadal (Secular) party in Tamil Nadu. He, as an effective communicator, polyglot and a good writer, used to translate the speeches of the national leaders like V.P.Singh, I.K.Gujaral, Shri.H.D.Deva Gowda, Ramvilas Paswan and has close rapport with them.

When there was communal violence in Gujarat in 2002 in which hundreds of innocent lives were massacred, he, along with a few senior leaders, resolved to strengthen the secular forces in the country for fighting against communal forces led by the BJP party. Attracted by the policies and programmes of the tall leader Smt.Sonia Gandhi he felt that the congress alone can overcome the communal forces to upkeep the secular credentials of the country, the Janatadal (secular) unit of Tamil Nadu under the leadership of the veteran leader Shri. G.A, Vadivelu, merged in to the congress party in a rally at Chennai in the year 2002. Then he became the Tamil Nadu State General Secretary of the Congress party in 2002. In the reshuffle in 2013, again he was nominated as General Secretary by the National President Smt. Sonia Gandhi and the Vice – President Shri. Rahul Gandhi.

Being an ardent follower of Mother Teresa, he desires to proclaim her values and ideologies to the humanity so that people from all walks of life may be inspired to become instruments of peace and the world may be replete with love, harmony and serenity.

Mother Teresa Forum and Mother Teresa Students Forum enroll members from all strata of the society and form committees to render service to the under privileged and the needy in the society. It identifies the richest of the rich and the poorest of the poor in the society in order to make the former help the latter so that the gap of inequality may be filled with the bridge of sharing. It invites young and energetic people irrespective of caste, religion, politics, gender, state and nation, to dedicate service for the people.

MTCT runs free ambulance service, free computer centers, free tailoring centers, free tuition centers in various parts of the country. All these services are offered as part of the mission initiated by G.K. Dhas. He is a man of simplicity to serve the needy and the oppressed in the society in the footsteps of Mother Teresa the saint of the gutters.

Journal

He is the Editor and publisher of “Mother News” a bilingual- monthly journal which tries to reengineer and transcend the society into a positive one. Great and experienced personalities scientists, IAS/IPS officers, legal luminaries, social activists etc. contribute articles to this journal. The articles are informative, social- oriented and reflective. It covers subjects other than politics, cinema, religion, caste or community. Every month more than ten thousand copies are dispatched to different parts of the world. It shapes the young generation to become writers.

Honours

The international Tamil University, United States of America has conferred a doctorate degree to him for his exemplary services to humanity through Mother Teresa Charitable Trust.

He is a man of hard work. His indefatigable hard work has mitigated the suffering of many people. Yet he is humble and simple. His service to the humanity is magnificent. He has sacrificed his entire life for the poor and the marginalized. And he still longs to serve them with a burning desire. His heart is always vibrating with many dreams- the dreams that will give hope to the hopeless, freedom to the poor from the shackles of poverty, freedom from the bondage of corruption, etc. Thinking of him, it always reminds of Robert Frost’s words
