Guggari Shanthaveerappa Shivarudrappa (born February 7, 1926 – died December 23, 2013), often called GSS, was a famous Indian poet and writer. He wrote in the Kannada language. In 2006, the Government of Karnataka gave him the special title of Rashtrakavi, which means "National Poet".

Early Life and Childhood
G. S. Shivarudrappa was born on February 7, 1926. His birthplace was Issur Village in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka. His father worked as a school teacher. Shivarudrappa completed his early schooling in Shikaripura. He passed away on December 23, 2013, in Bangalore.
His Journey in Education
Shivarudrappa earned his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in 1949. He then completed his Master of Arts (MA) degree in 1953. Both degrees were from the University of Mysore. He was a brilliant student and won three gold medals for his achievements.
He was a student of the famous writer Kuvempu. Kuvempu's writings and life greatly inspired him. In 1965, G. S. Shivarudrappa earned his doctorate degree. His special study was called "Saundarya Samīkṣe," which means "A Survey of Beauty." This work was a big step forward in understanding literary beauty.
His Career as a Professor and Writer
Shivarudrappa began his career in 1949. He started as a lecturer teaching Kannada language at the Mysore University. In 1963, he moved to Hyderabad to join Osmania University. There, he became a reader, which is like a senior lecturer. Later, he became the head of the Kannada department. He worked at Osmania University until 1966.
In 1966, Shivarudrappa joined Bangalore University as a professor. He was later chosen to be the director of the university's Kannada Study Center. He continued to contribute to this center for many years. He also gave lectures in Kannada in cities like Davanagere and Shivamogga. He retired from government service in 1986. From 1987 to 1990, he was the president of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy.
Becoming the National Poet
In 2006, G. S. Shivarudrappa received a very special honor. The Government of Karnataka gave him the title of Rashtrakavi. This means "Poet of the Nation" in Sanskrit. This happened during the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations. These celebrations marked 50 years of the state of Karnataka.
He was only the third Kannada poet to receive this important title. The other two poets were Govinda Pai and his teacher, Kuvempu.
