Gabriel Balart i Crehuet was a Spanish composer, a person who writes music. He was also a conductor, leading orchestras, and a music teacher. He was born in Barcelona, Spain, on June 8, 1824. He passed away in the same city on July 5, 1893.

Gabriel Balart studied music at the famous Paris Conservatory. After his studies, he wrote many pieces of music, including five romantic symphonies. A symphony is a long piece of music for an orchestra. His most popular work was a light opera called Amore y Arte. An opera is a play where the words are sung.

His Life and Music

Gabriel Balart started learning music when he was just seven years old. He studied music theory, piano, and violin with Francesc Sala. Later, Antoni Pasarell taught him how to compose music and play the violin.

In 1842, Balart traveled to Paris, France. There, he continued his studies at the Paris Conservatory. He learned from important teachers like Jean-Delphin Alard and Michele Carafa.

A few years later, in 1849, he moved to Milan, Italy. He became a successful opera conductor at the Teatro Re. In 1853, he returned to Barcelona. He was made the music director of the famous Liceu opera house.

Balart spent a lot of his time conducting and teaching music. One of his students was Teobaldo Power, who also became a well-known musician. In 1886, Gabriel Balart stopped composing new music. He became a professor at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona. He taught harmony and composition there. From 1889 until his death in 1893, he was the director of this music school.
