Gabriel Gaté's Early Life and Training
Gabriel Gaté was born in 1955 in the Loire Valley, France. He grew up in a town called Beaupréau. His family grew their own vegetables and even made their own wine. This helped him learn about fresh ingredients from a young age.
Learning to Cook from Family and Masters
Gabriel's grandmother taught him how to cook. This was his first step into the world of food. Later, he became a chef's apprentice. He learned from a Master Chef named Albert Augereau. This training happened at the "Jeanne de Laval" restaurant in western France.

His first book was called French Cuisine for Australians. His second book, Family Food, was published with the Anti-Cancer Council. This partnership helped people learn about healthy eating. Two more books, Smart Food and Good Food Fast, also came from this partnership. These three books together sold 500,000 copies.
Later books like Favourite Fast Recipes, Television Recipes, and Great Cakes and Desserts helped his total sales go over 700,000 copies.

Gabriel Gaté moved to Australia in 1977 with his wife, who was born in Melbourne. Since then, he has become a very popular chef in Melbourne. He has also greatly influenced how Australians cook today.
