Gabriel Newton (1683–1762) was an important person in the English city of Leicester. He is best known for using his wealth to help educate poor children in the city.

Who Was Gabriel Newton?

Gabriel Newton was born in Leicester in 1683. He started his career as a wool-comber, which means he prepared wool to be made into cloth. Later, he became the owner of a local inn called the Horse and Trumpet Inn.

His Role in Leicester's Government

Newton became involved in the city's government. In 1710, he joined the city's Corporation, which was like the local council that helped run Leicester. He was chosen as an alderman in 1726. An alderman was a senior member of the council. In 1732, he was elected as the Mayor of Leicester, which was the highest position in the city's government.

How He Became Wealthy

Gabriel Newton was married three times. Each of his wives was a very rich woman. This helped him become a wealthy man himself.

Newton's Lasting Legacy

After his only son passed away, Gabriel Newton had no children to leave his money to. So, he decided to use his large fortune to help others. He wanted to provide education for poor children in Leicester.

The Greencoat School

Newton set up a charity school in Leicester. It was located at the Church of St Mary de Castro. The school opened in 1785, some years after his death, due to some legal issues with his will. This school became known as the Greencoat School. It got its name because of the green uniforms the students wore.

Alderman Newton's School

The Greencoat School later grew and changed its name to Alderman Newton's School. It continued to educate children for many years. The school existed until 1999. At that time, the local government combined it with two other schools to create a new, larger school.

Remembering Gabriel Newton

Gabriel Newton is one of four important men shown on Leicester's Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower. This tower is a famous landmark in the city. You can also visit his memorial tomb. It is in the graveyard of All Saints Church, Leicester on Highcross Street.
