Gabriele Salvatores (born July 30, 1950) is a famous Italian film director and screenwriter. He has won an Academy Award for his movies.

About Gabriele Salvatores
Gabriele Salvatores was born in Naples, Italy. He started his career in theater in 1972. He helped create a theater group called Teatro dell'Elfo in Milan. He directed many new and exciting plays for this group until 1989.
Early Films and Success
In 1989, he directed his third movie, Marrakech Express. After that, in 1990, he made Turné. Both of these films often featured a group of actor friends. These actors included Diego Abatantuono and Fabrizio Bentivoglio. They appeared in many of his later movies too.
In 1991, Salvatores became very well-known around the world for his film Mediterraneo. This movie won an Academy Award for being the best foreign film. It also won three David di Donatello awards, which are very important awards for Italian movies.
Exploring New Ideas
In 1992, he released Puerto Escondido. This movie was based on a book by Pino Cacucci. In this film, Claudio Bisio joined Diego Abatantuono and Fabrizio Bentivoglio. The next year, he directed Sud. This movie, starring Silvio Orlando, tried to show the problems in the southern part of Italy. It looked at life from the view of people who were unemployed or on the edges of society.
Gabriele Salvatores' movies often explore themes like wanting to escape from a difficult reality. They also show a longing for friends and journeys that seem to never end. In 1997, he started trying new things with his film Nirvana. This was a science fiction movie that got different opinions from people.
Later Works
After Nirvana, he made the unique film Denti (meaning Teeth) in 2000. Then came Amnèsia in 2002. Both of these movies starred Sergio Rubini.
In 2003, he directed a very successful movie called I'm Not Scared. This film was based on a book by Niccolò Ammaniti. In 2005, he directed a detective-style movie called Quo Vadis, Baby?. His 2008 film As God Commands was shown at the 31st Moscow International Film Festival.
Since 2011, Salvatores has been in charge of the artistic side of the Milan Film Festival.
