Gabriele Salvatores (born July 30, 1950) is a famous Italian film director and writer. He is known for making movies that often explore themes of friendship, travel, and escaping from everyday life. He even won an Academy Award for one of his films!

About Gabriele Salvatores
Gabriele Salvatores was born in Naples, Italy. He started his career in 1972 as a theater director. He even started his own theater company in Milan called Teatro dell'Elfo. He directed many interesting plays there until 1989.
In 1989, he directed his third movie, Marrakech Express. This was followed by Turné in 1990. These films often featured a group of actor friends. Some of these actors were Diego Abatantuono and Fabrizio Bentivoglio. They appeared in many of his later movies too. Turné was even shown at the famous 1990 Cannes Film Festival.
Winning an Academy Award
In 1991, Salvatores became famous around the world for his film Mediterraneo. This movie won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. This is a very important award in the film industry! The movie also won three David di Donatello awards. These are the top awards for Italian cinema.
Later Films and Themes
In 1992, he released Puerto Escondido. This movie was based on a book by Pino Cacucci. In this film, Claudio Bisio joined his usual actors, Abatantuono and Bentivoglio. The next year, he directed Sud. This movie tried to show the problems in the southern part of Italy. It looked at life from the view of people who were unemployed.
