Gaetano Latilla (born January 12, 1711 – died January 15, 1788) was an Italian composer. He wrote many operas, which are plays set to music. He was a very important composer just before another famous musician named Niccolò Piccinni, who was his nephew.

Latilla's music was popular in his time. He helped shape the style of Italian opera.

Early Life and Training

Gaetano Latilla was born in a city called Bari in Italy. When he was young, he moved to Naples. There, he studied music at a special school called the Loreto Conservatory. This school helped him learn how to compose.

His Music and Operas

Latilla started writing operas in 1732. He often wrote for a theater in Naples called the Teatro dei Fiorentini. He became famous for his comic operas. These were funny musical plays, often about everyday life.

Two of his most well-known comic operas were Gismondo (from 1737) and Madama Ciana (from 1738). These two works were very popular. They were often performed by traveling opera groups in the 1740s and early 1750s. This means many people across Italy got to enjoy his funny stories and catchy tunes.

Besides comic operas, Latilla also wrote some serious operas, called opere serie. These operas told grand stories, often from history or mythology. His first serious opera was Demofoonte, which was performed in Venice in 1738.

Later Life

Gaetano Latilla passed away in Naples in 1788. His music helped set the stage for other great Italian opera composers who came after him.
