Gainsthorpe Deserted Medieval Village - geograph.org.uk - 1563865
Overview of Gainsthorpe

Gainsthorpe is a special place in Lincolnshire, England. It's what we call a deserted medieval village (DMV). This means it was once a busy village during the Middle Ages, but for some reason, everyone left, and it became empty. Today, you can see its remains as interesting shapes in a field at Gainsthorpe Farm.

This historic site is located near Hibaldstow, a little bit west of the main A15 road. It's about five miles southwest of a town called Brigg.

What is a Deserted Medieval Village?

A deserted medieval village, or DMV, is a place where people lived and worked many centuries ago, usually between the 11th and 15th centuries. For different reasons, the villagers eventually left, and the homes and buildings slowly fell apart. Over time, the land became fields or forests, but the old village layout can still be seen as bumps and dips in the ground.

Why Did Villages Become Deserted?

There were many reasons why people might have left their villages. Sometimes, terrible diseases like the Black Death wiped out most of the population. Other times, the climate changed, making it hard to grow food. Wars or changes in farming methods could also force people to move away. For example, if a landlord decided to raise sheep instead of crops, they might have evicted the villagers.

Exploring Gainsthorpe Today

Gainsthorpe is now looked after by English Heritage, an organization that protects important historical sites in England. This means it's a great place for you to visit and learn about the past.

How to Visit Gainsthorpe

There's a small car park where you can leave your car. From there, a short path, about 220 yards long, leads you right to the village site. It's an easy walk, perfect for exploring.

What You Can See at the Site

When you arrive, you'll notice the ground isn't flat. Instead, you'll see clear "humps and hollows." These are actually the remains of the old village!

  • Sunken Roads: You can often spot paths that are lower than the surrounding ground. These were the main roads and tracks used by villagers, worn down by centuries of footsteps and carts.
  • Tofts and Crofts: These are the raised, rectangular areas. A "toft" was the plot of land where a house stood, and a "croft" was a small piece of land next to it, often used for a garden or a small animal pen. Seeing these shapes helps you imagine where homes and farms once stood.
  • Earthworks: The general term for these bumps and dips is "earthworks." They are like a map of the old village, carved into the land by time. They show where buildings, fences, and paths used to be.

By walking around Gainsthorpe, you can get a real sense of what a medieval village looked like and how people lived hundreds of years ago. It's like stepping back in time!
