Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gaius Cornelius Gallicanus was an important Roman soldier and politician. He belonged to the equestrian class, which was a group of wealthy Roman citizens. The Roman Emperor Vespasian chose him to join the Roman senate. This was a big honor, given because Gallicanus was very loyal during a difficult time called the Year of the Four Emperors.

Gallicanus's Early Career

After joining the Roman Senate, Gallicanus began a series of important jobs. In the years 79 and 80 AD, he served as the governor of Baetica. This was a Roman province located in what is now modern-day Spain.

Governor of Gaul

Soon after his time in Baetica, Gallicanus became the governor of Gallia Lugdunensis. This was a large Roman province in Gaul, which is now France. He took over this role in 80 AD and stayed there until 83 AD.

Becoming a Roman Consul

In 84 AD, Gallicanus reached a very high position in Roman politics. He was appointed as a suffect consul. A consul was one of the two highest elected officials in the Roman Republic and Empire. Suffect consuls served for a shorter period, often two months. Gallicanus served from September to October 84 AD. His colleague during this time was Gaius Tullius Capito Pomponianus Plotius Firmus.

Leading the Province of Africa

The most important part of Gallicanus's career was when he became the proconsul of Africa. This was a very rich and important Roman province in North Africa. He held this powerful position from 98 to 99 AD.

Helping Roman Children

After returning to Italy, Gallicanus took on a special role. He was put in charge of the alimenta program in a town called Veleia. The alimenta was a special program created by the Roman government. It used public money to help care for poor children in Central Italy. This shows that Gallicanus was not only a soldier and politician but also cared about the well-being of others.
