Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gans, also known as Gaus, was once a small community or "settlement" located in Humboldt County, California. It was about 13 miles (21 kilometers) south of a town called Orick, California.

What Was Gans?

Gans was a place where people lived and worked, but it was never a big town. It was a "former settlement," meaning it doesn't exist as a populated place anymore. Its exact location was at latitude 41.27623 and longitude -124.00479.

The Gans Post Office

A very important part of the Gans community was its post office. It first opened in 1887 under the name "Gaus." Just one year later, in 1888, its name was changed to "Gans." The post office moved a few times during its operation. It finally closed down completely in 1904.

Who Was George W. Gans?

The settlement and its post office were named after a person named George W. Gans. He was a "local landowner," which means he owned a lot of property in that area. Naming places after important local figures or landowners was a common practice in the past.
