Gao Qiong's Early Life

Gao Qiong came from a family that lived in a region called Yan during an earlier time in China's history. He faced a very difficult start in life. Despite these challenges, he managed to overcome them and join the army. He first joined the troops led by Wang Qi, who was a general during the Hou Zhou Dynasty. Gao Qiong quickly showed his skills and bravery in battles, especially during the fights against the Southern Tang kingdom.

A General's Rise

Gao Qiong continued to serve the Song Dynasty with great dedication. In the year 1004, a powerful leader named Dowager Empress Xiao Yanyan led a huge army of two hundred thousand warriors to attack the Northern Song Dynasty. This was a very serious threat. Gao Qiong played a crucial role in helping Emperor Zhenzong travel safely to the battlefront. This was where the Song and Liao armies were facing each other. His actions helped to keep the emperor safe and boost the morale of the Song troops.

The Chanyuan Treaty

After the intense confrontation, Gao Qiong was also involved in the discussions that led to an important peace agreement. This agreement is known as the Chanyuan Treaty. This treaty helped to bring peace between the Song Dynasty and the Liao Dynasty for a long time. His involvement showed how much the emperor trusted him, not just in battle but also in important political matters.

Family and Legacy

Because of his loyalty and great service, Gao Qiong earned the full trust of Emperor Zhenzong. He became a very respected figure in the Song court. His family also became closely connected to the royal family. In fact, his granddaughter later became Empress Gao, which was a very high honor.

Even though Gao Qiong himself could not read, he understood the importance of learning. He often told his sons that they should not just rely on their family's fame or their parents' achievements. Instead, he encouraged them to study hard and work to achieve their own personal excellence. This shows that he valued education and hard work for future generations.
