García Gil Manrique (died 1655) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Spain during the 1600s. He served as a bishop in different cities, including Barcelona, Gerona, and Cuenca. He was also involved in politics, even becoming the Viceroy of Catalonia for a short time.

A Life in the Church

García Gil Manrique started his journey in the church in 1618. Pope Paul V appointed him as an auxiliary (or assistant) bishop in Cuenca. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop. He was officially made a bishop on April 29, 1618.

Later, in 1627, Pope Urban VIII appointed him as the Bishop of Gerona. He served there for a few years.

In 1633, Pope Urban VIII again appointed him to a new role: Bishop of Barcelona. This was a very important position. He stayed as the Bishop of Barcelona until he passed away in 1655.

A Difficult Political Role

Besides his church duties, García Gil Manrique also had a challenging political role. In 1640, King Felipe IV of Spain made him the Viceroy of Catalonia. A viceroy was like a governor, ruling a region for the king.

He became viceroy during a very difficult time called the Catalan Revolt. The previous two viceroys had been killed.

The President of the Generalitat de Catalunya (the government of Catalonia) started talking with France. They wanted Catalonia to become an independent country under France's protection. Gil Manrique tried to convince them not to do this, but he was unsuccessful.

The Spanish King sent soldiers to Catalonia and told Gil Manrique to use force against the rebels. However, Gil Manrique refused to use violence. Because of this, the King removed him from his position.

The Catalan government did not accept the new viceroy, and fighting began in December 1640. Gil Manrique became very ill. He was forced to leave Catalonia in October 1642. He spent the rest of his life in El Pobo de Dueñas.
