García Álvarez de Toledo y Carrillo de Toledo (born around 1424 – died June 20, 1488) was an important Spanish nobleman. He was a strong military leader and a smart politician. His family had been in charge of the lands around Alba de Tormes since 1369. He became the 1st Duke of Alba de Tormes.
Who Was García Álvarez de Toledo?
García was the son of Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, who was the 1st Count of Alba de Tormes. His mother was Mencía Carrillo de Toledo.
In 1470, García Álvarez de Toledo was given the special title of Duke. Two years later, in 1472, King Henry IV of Castile made the County of Alba de Tormes a "hereditary Duchy." This meant the title and lands could be passed down in García's family.
The first Duke of Alba was a key figure in the War of the Castilian Succession. This was a fight over who would be the next ruler of Castile. García supported Isabella I of Castille, who later became Queen. He fought against her niece, Juana la Beltraneja.
García's Family
In 1448, García married María Enríquez de Quiñones. She was the daughter of Fadrique Enríquez de Mendoza, who was a powerful Admiral of Castile.
García and María had a large family with five sons and four daughters. One of their granddaughters, María de Toledo y Rojas, later married Diego Colón. Diego was the son of the famous explorer Christopher Columbus.
