Who is Garth Taylor?
Garth Taylor grew up in Western Australia. He started his football journey with the Swan Districts team in the WAFL. In 1998, he was chosen by the Fremantle Dockers in the 1998 AFL Draft. He was the 49th player picked that year.
Garth's Early Football Success
Even though Garth was one of the smallest players in the AFL at 166 cm, he had a fantastic start to his career. In 1998, he won the Larke Medal. This award is given to the best player at the national under-18 championships. It showed everyone how talented he was from a young age.
Playing for the Fremantle Dockers
Garth Taylor made his big debut for Fremantle in Round 1 of 1999. He played against the West Coast Eagles at Subiaco Oval. In his first year, he played 14 games. A special moment for him was in Round 7, 1999, against Geelong. Even though he was only 18, he received three Brownlow Medal votes in that game. These votes are given to the best players on the field by the umpires.
Garth faced some challenges during his time in the AFL. He had a kidney issue that made it hard for him to play consistently. He played his last game for Fremantle in Round 22 of 2000 and was then removed from the team list.
After Fremantle: New Teams
After leaving Fremantle, Garth was picked by the Richmond Football Club in the 2001 Rookie Draft. However, he did not play any league games for Richmond. He then moved to play for the Northern Bullants in the Victorian Football League. He played very well there. In 2005, Garth returned home to Western Australia to play for Swan Districts again.
Garth's Coaching Roles
Later in his career, Garth Taylor started coaching. In 2016, he became the coach and captain for the Nungarin Panthers. This team plays in the Central Wheatbelt Football League. More recently, in 2023, Garth was signed as the football coach for the Beacon Bombers team.
