Gastone de Murols was an important leader of the Knights Hospitaller. He was the sixth Grand Master of this famous group. He held this high position from 1170 until he passed away on June 20, 1172. Early Life and Role
Gastone de Murols, also known as Caste, came from a family in Murols. This area is located in a region of France called Auvergne. Before becoming the Grand Master, Gastone played a very important role in the Knights Hospitaller.
Treasurer of the Order
Gastone de Murols first served as the treasurer for the Knights Hospitaller. This meant he was in charge of all the money and finances for the Order. He took on this job after Géraud de Saint-André. Gastone worked as the treasurer from 1163 to 1167. He kept this important financial role until he was chosen to be the Grand Master.
Becoming Grand Master
In 1170, Gastone de Murols was chosen to become the new Grand Master. He was picked by the previous Grand Master, Gilbert of Aissailly. This was a very high honor and a big responsibility.
A Short Division
When Gastone was elected, not all the knights agreed with the choice. Some members of the Order did not accept him as their leader. These knights supported another person named Rostang. This caused a small split within the Knights Hospitaller. It was the first time the Order had been divided in this way. However, this disagreement did not last long. Gastone de Murols died just two years later, in 1172. After his death, the Order became united again under a new leader.
