The Gate of Elvira (Spanish: Puerta de Elvira) is an old archway found in Granada, Spain. It was officially recognized as a special historical monument (called Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1896. You can find it at the start of Calle Elvira (Elvira Street), right next to the historic Albaicín neighborhood.
A Glimpse into History
This gate was once known as Bāb Ilbīra in Arabic. It was originally part of the city walls built by the Zirid people in the 11th century.
From Old Walls to Strong Fortifications
Later, in the 14th century, the gate was rebuilt. It was made much stronger and more like a fortress. This was done by the Nasrid rulers to include it in their new, larger city walls. Today, only a part of this ancient gate still stands.
The Old Cemetery
A large Muslim cemetery, called the Ibn Malik Cemetery, used to be located just outside this gate. Today, the Royal Hospital (Hospital Real) stands on top of what was once part of this old cemetery.
