Gaubald facts for kids
Gaubald was an important church leader who lived a long time ago, from about 700 to 761. He became the very first official bishop of Regensburg, a city in Germany. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church, overseeing a specific area called a diocese. Gaubald is also considered a blessed person by the church, which means he lived a very holy life. You might also see his name spelled Gawibald, Geupald, or Gaibald.
Gaubald's Life and Work
Gaubald became a bishop in Regensburg in the year 739. He was officially made a bishop by Saint Boniface, another very famous church leader.
Besides being a bishop, Gaubald was also an abbot-bishop. This means he was both a bishop and the head of a monastery, which is a community where monks live and work. He was the abbot of St. Emmeram's Abbey, a well-known monastery.
In 740, Gaubald moved the bones of a respected saint named Emmeram of Regensburg. He moved them to a special underground room called a crypt within the Benedictine abbey. This was an important act of respect for the saint. When Gaubald passed away on December 23, 761, he was buried in the Ramwold crypt at the same Abbey.
