The Gaussia spirituana is a special type of palm tree. It is found only in one specific area: the Sierra de Jatibonico mountains in central Cuba. This means it is an endemic species, which means it naturally lives in just one place in the world.

What Does the Gaussia Spirituana Look Like?

This palm tree can grow quite tall, reaching up to 7 metres (about 23 feet) high. Its trunk is usually whitish in color. The bottom of the trunk is wider, about 30 to 35 centimetres (12 to 14 inches) across, and then it gets narrower as it goes up.

Its Leaves and Fruit

Each Gaussia spirituana tree has up to ten large pinnate leaves. These leaves look like big feathers, with many smaller leaflets arranged along a central stem. The tree also produces small, round fruits. These fruits are bright orange-red and are about 1 centimetre (less than half an inch) wide.

Why is the Gaussia Spirituana Endangered?

Sadly, the Gaussia spirituana is an endangered species. This means there are very few of these trees left in the wild. Scientists know of only about 150 individual trees.

Threats to the Palm

These remaining trees are split into five small groups, which makes them even more vulnerable. They face several big dangers:

  • Habitat destruction: Their natural home is being destroyed, often to make way for human activities.
  • Non-native pathogens: These are diseases or harmful germs that come from other places. They can attack the trees and make them sick.

Because of these threats, it's very important to protect the Gaussia spirituana so it doesn't disappear forever.
