Gavin Dalzell, the 2nd Earl of Carnwath, was an important Scottish nobleman who lived from 1627 to 1674. From 1639, he was also known by the special name Lord Dalzell. He was a strong supporter of the King's side, called the Royalists, during the English Civil War.

Who Was Gavin Dalzell?

Gavin Dalzell was the son of Robert Dalzell, 1st Earl of Carnwath and Christian Douglas. He was born in 1627. As a young man, he grew up in a time of great change and conflict in Scotland and England.

His Family Life

Gavin Dalzell married Margaret Carnegie. She was the daughter of David Carnegie, who was known as Lord Carnegie. Gavin and Margaret had seven children together. Later in his life, Gavin married a second time to Lady Mary Erskine. She was the daughter of Alexander Erskine, the Earl of Kellie.

Role in the English Civil War

Gavin Dalzell became known as the Earl of Carnwath in Scotland between 1645 and 1654. This happened because his father had been accused of not being loyal to the Scottish Parliament. Gavin, however, remained very loyal to the King.

He actively fought for the Royalist side during the English Civil War. He took part in a major battle called the Battle of Worcester. In this battle, the Royalists were defeated. Gavin was captured and held as a prisoner for many years after the battle.

Later Life and Legacy

Gavin Dalzell passed away in June 1674. After his death, his oldest son, James Dalzell, inherited his titles and became the 3rd Earl of Carnwath.
