She is most famous for her song "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas", which she recorded in 1953 when she was just 10 years old. Later, in 1960, Gayla used a different name, Jamie Horton. Under this name, she had a smaller hit song called "My Little Marine". She also recorded a song called "Robot Man", which was a cover of a popular song in the UK, but it didn't become a big hit for her.

Gayla Peevey's family moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma, in 1948. Before moving to California, she went to Columbus Elementary School. She later studied at San Diego State University and earned a degree in education. Even though she became a teacher, she eventually decided to stop teaching.
Gayla is married to Cliff Henderson. They have a daughter named Sydney Forest and three grandchildren. After she stopped performing as a singer, Gayla started her own company that creates jingles for advertisements. She also sings in her church.
