Early Life and Education
Geertruida was born in Haarlem, a city in the Netherlands. Her parents were Gerard Pieter and Jacoba Elisabeth van Vladeracken. She grew up with three brothers and sisters.
She loved music from a young age. Geertruida studied music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. There, she learned from famous teachers like Bernard Zweers and Anton Tierie.
In 1901, Geertruida married Nicolaas Cornelis Vogel. He was a lawyer and also a composer. After he passed away, she married Jan Poortenaar in 1916. Jan was an artist and a pianist.
Musical Career and Travels
Geertruida was a gifted singer. She often gave vocal concerts across Europe and America. Her husband, Jan Poortenaar, would play the piano for her. These tours also helped Jan show his artwork in many cities. Today, his art is in museums around the world.
From 1922 to 1924, Geertruida and Jan traveled to Indonesia. They performed concerts there. Jan also painted many beautiful pictures during their trip. They wrote a book about their adventures called Een kunstreis in de Tropen. This means An Artist in Java and Other Islands of Indonesia.
