The Story of Gem's Beginning

The community of Gem was started in 1892. A man named Thomas R. Harper played a big part in its early days. He built a store there, which was likely an important place for people to buy supplies and meet up. Thomas R. Harper also became the very first postmaster for Gem.

When Did Gem Get a Post Office?

A post office was officially opened in Gem in 1895. This was a big deal because it meant residents could send and receive mail right in their own community, making communication much easier. The post office served the people of Gem for several years.

How Long Did the Post Office Stay Open?

The post office in Gem operated for about nine years. It remained open until 1904, after which it was closed down. Even though the post office is no longer there, Gem continues to be a small community in Noble County, Ohio.
