Gem is a small, unincorporated community located in Hemphill County, Texas, in the United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually governed by the county.
History of Gem
The community of Gem got its start in 1909. That year, a post office was opened there. A post office is a place where people can send and receive mail. This post office served the people of Gem for many years, finally closing down in 1954.
The story goes that one of the first people to settle in the area named the community "Gem" after his wife. It's a sweet way to honor someone special!
