Gemma Houghton (born December 31, 1993) is a talented Australian rules footballer. She plays for the Port Adelaide Football Club in the AFL Women's league. Before playing AFL, Gemma was a high-level basketball player. She joined Fremantle in 2016 after a special talent search.
Gemma's AFLW Journey
Gemma Houghton played her first AFL Women's game in 2017. This was for the Fremantle team. Her debut was against the Western Bulldogs. She played in seven matches during her first season.
In 2018, Gemma played for the Swan Districts Football Club. This was in the WAFL Women's competition. She won the Mandy McSherry Medal. This award is for the team's best and fairest player.
Gemma had a fantastic year in 2019. She played in all eight of Fremantle's games. She kicked 9 goals, becoming the team's top goalkicker. Her amazing speed and strong marking skills were noticed. She was chosen for the 2019 AFL Women's All-Australian team. She also made the 2020 AFL Women's All-Australian team. This means she was one of the best players in the league.
Gemma's brother, Joel Houghton, also played football. He was drafted by Fremantle in 2009. He played in the West Australian Football League (WAFL).
In 2022, Gemma made a big move. She joined the new team, Port Adelaide. She scored their very first goal in Round 1! She has been the leading goalkicker for Port Adelaide in their first two seasons.
