Gemma Rovira Ortega was born in 1974. She went to the Universidad Central de Barcelona to study Spanish Philology. This means she learned a lot about the Spanish language and its literature. Back then, there wasn't a special school just for translation. She also studied English at the British Institute in Barcelona. There, she earned a high-level English certificate from Cambridge Assessment English.

Her Work as a Translator

Since 1988, Gemma Rovira Ortega has worked only as a translator. She changes books from English into Spanish. She has worked with many different publishing companies. These include Anagrama, Minotauro, Random House, and Salamandra.

Gemma started translating the Harry Potter books in 2004. Her first Harry Potter translation was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She also translated The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. This book was a huge bestseller in Spain in 2007 and 2008. She has also translated books by other authors like Anne Tyler.

Gemma is also part of groups for translators. She was a member of APTIC, which is the Professional Association of Translators and Interpreters of Catalonia. She was also part of ACE Translators from 2006 to 2010. This group is for translators in the Spanish Association of Writers.
