Patrick James Rothfuss (born June 6, 1973) is an American author. He is famous for his fantasy book series, The Kingkiller Chronicle. The first book, The Name of the Wind (2007), won many awards. Its sequel, The Wise Man's Fear (2011), became a No. 1 best-seller on The New York Times list.

Early Life and Education
Patrick Rothfuss was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He went to DeForest Area High School. Later, he earned his Bachelor's degree in English in 1999 from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. He also wrote for the campus newspaper there. In 2002, he received a Master's degree from Washington State University. Before his books were published, he won a writing contest in 2002.

Popular Books and Stories
In 2006, Rothfuss sold his first novel, The Name of the Wind. It was released in 2007 and quickly won a Quill Award. Publishers Weekly also named it one of the Books of the Year. An updated version with pictures came out in 2017.
The second book in the series, The Wise Man's Fear, was published in 2011. It became a top best-seller right away.
Rothfuss also wrote The Slow Regard of Silent Things. This illustrated story came out in 2014. It is a companion story to The Kingkiller Chronicle and focuses on a character named Auri.
He has also written shorter stories set in the same world. "How Old Holly Came To Be" was in the book Unfettered (2013). Another story, The Lightning Tree, was in the book Rogues (2014). This story features the character Bast.
Comics and Other Projects
In 2018, Patrick Rothfuss helped write a comic book series. It was called Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons. This series combined characters from the TV show Rick and Morty with the game Dungeons & Dragons. The deluxe edition of the comic was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2022.
Fans are eagerly waiting for the third book in The Kingkiller Chronicle, called The Doors of Stone. In 2021, Rothfuss promised to share a chapter if his charity reached a big fundraising goal. He also said he would record the chapter with famous people if they reached an even bigger goal. The chapter has not been released yet, and he has mentioned it is taking longer than he hoped.
In 2021, Rothfuss started his own publishing company called Underthing Press. Their first project was to reprint a popular webcomic called Digger. He wanted to start this company because he couldn't find a new copy of the comic for a friend.
Helping Others with Charity
Patrick Rothfuss started a charity called Worldbuilders in 2008. This organization has raised over $11.5 million. Most of this money goes to Heifer International. Heifer International helps communities around the world. They provide things like animals, clean water, and education. By 2020, Worldbuilders had raised over $10 million for Heifer.
Podcasts and Games
In 2020, Rothfuss worked with One Shot Podcast to release a mini-series. This podcast series is also set in the world of his Kingkiller Chronicles books.
He also helped create a game called Tak in 2014. This game is based on a game mentioned in his book The Wise Man's Fear. He was also part of the team that designed the video game Torment: Tides of Numenera.
