Patrick James Rothfuss (born June 6, 1973) is an American author. He is famous for his popular fantasy book series, The Kingkiller Chronicle. The first book, The Name of the Wind (published in 2007), won several awards. Its sequel, The Wise Man's Fear (published in 2011), even reached the top of The New York Times Best Seller list!

Patrick Rothfuss's Early Life
Patrick Rothfuss was born in Madison, Wisconsin. He went to DeForest Area High School and later studied English at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. He wrote for the campus newspaper there. In 2002, he earned a master's degree from Washington State University. He also won an award for a story called "The Road to Levenshir," which was part of his book The Wise Man's Fear before it was published.
Patrick Rothfuss's Career
Writing Fantasy Books
In 2006, Patrick Rothfuss sold his first novel, The Name of the Wind. It came out in 2007 and quickly became very popular. It won a Quill Award and was named one of Publishers Weekly's Books of the Year. An updated version with pictures was released in 2017.
His second book, The Wise Man's Fear, was published in March 2011. It was a huge success, becoming the number one best-selling book on The New York Times list.
Rothfuss also wrote a shorter story called The Slow Regard of Silent Things. This book, published in October 2014, is about a character named Auri from The Kingkiller Chronicle world.
He has also written other stories set in the same world. "How Old Holly Came To Be" was in a collection called Unfettered (2013). Another story, The Lightning Tree, was in the book Rogues (2014). This story features a character named Bast.
Comics and Other Projects
In 2018, Patrick Rothfuss helped write a comic book series called Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons. This series combined characters from the TV show Rick and Morty with the game Dungeons & Dragons. The collected edition of these comics was even nominated for an Eisner Award in 2022.
Fans are eagerly waiting for the third book in The Kingkiller Chronicle series, called The Doors of Stone. Patrick Rothfuss has mentioned that he is still working on it. In December 2021, he offered to share a chapter if his charity reached a big fundraising goal. While the goal was met, the chapter's release has taken longer than expected.
Underthing Press: A New Publishing Company
In December 2021, Patrick Rothfuss started his own publishing company called Underthing Press. He teamed up with Grim Oak Press for this new adventure. Their first project was to reprint Digger, a popular webcomic that won an award in 2012. Rothfuss said he always dreamed of having his own publishing company.
Worldbuilders: His Charity Work
Patrick Rothfuss started a charity called Worldbuilders in 2008. This organization has raised over $11.5 million to help people around the world. Most of the money goes to Heifer International. This charity provides things like farm animals, clean water, and education to communities in need. By 2020, Worldbuilders had raised over $10 million for Heifer.
Podcasts and Games
From 2015 to 2016, Rothfuss co-hosted a podcast called Unattended Consequences. In 2020, he also released a mini-series podcast set in his Kingkiller Chronicle world.
He also helped create a board game called Tak in 2014. This game is based on a game mentioned in his book The Wise Man's Fear. He also worked on the stories for video games like Torment: Tides of Numenera.
