Exploring the Samuel Strong House
What Does the House Look Like?
The General Samuel Strong House is located on West Main Street in Vergennes. It has a curved driveway in front and is hidden from the road by trees. The house is made of wood and has two floors. It's shaped like the letter "L" and has a special roof that slopes down on all sides.
The front of the house, which faces the street, has five windows and a main door in the middle. The door has decorative pillars on each side. Above the door, there's a half-round window and a small, pointed roof shape. A low, triangular shape rises from the main roof above the middle part of the house. In the center of this triangle, there's an oval window. The edges of the roof and the triangular shape have a decorative pattern that looks like teeth. The side of the house facing east is simpler, with its own entrance covered by a small porch.
Who Was Samuel Strong?
The house was built around 1796, and people believe Samuel Strong himself built it to live in. Samuel Strong was a very important person in the local community. He was a leader in the local army, called the militia, during the War of 1812. This war was fought between the United States and Great Britain.
Samuel Strong played a big part in getting local soldiers ready for the Battle of Plattsburgh. This battle happened near the end of the War of 1812 and was a very important victory for the Americans. Strong's efforts helped protect the area and showed his strong leadership.
