William Eugene Russell (born December 2, 1932 – died May 5, 1981), known as Gene Russell, was an American musician. He played the keyboard, including the piano and the Fender Rhodes electric piano. Gene Russell was famous for his pop, jazz, and soul music. He is best known for starting his own record company, Black Jazz Records, and releasing many albums through it.
Gene Russell's Musical Journey
Gene Russell was born in Los Angeles, California. He had a famous cousin, the guitarist Charlie Christian. Gene learned music from another great musician, Hampton Hawes.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Gene Russell wrote music for movies and TV shows. He also appeared as an actor. He played music with many well-known jazz artists. Some of these included Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Zoot Sims, Leroy Vinnegar, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, and Miles Davis.
Starting Black Jazz Records
In 1969, Gene Russell started his own record company called Black Jazz Records. He got help with money from Dick Schrory. The main goal of this record label was to help new and talented African American jazz musicians and singers. It gave them a chance to share their music with the world.
