Why is it Called General Escobedo?
The city is named after a famous person, General Mariano Escobedo. He was an important figure in Mexican history.
From Village to City: Escobedo's Journey
Before it became a city, Escobedo was known as "Topo de los Ayala." In 1830, it was part of the larger area of Monterrey. Later, in 1867, it became separate from the San Nicolás de los Garza municipality. This change was made by Governor Jerónimo Treviño. On February 24, 1868, it was officially named "Villa de Gral. Escobedo."
A Look at Escobedo's History
Escobedo has a long history, going back over 400 years. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in Nuevo León. The land was first known as "Los Llanos del Topo," which means "The Plains of the Topo."
Who First Owned the Land?
Captain José de Treviño was the first person to own these lands. He received the territory on April 25, 1604. This was granted to him by Governor Diego de Montemayor.
How the City Started
Even though Captain Treviño was the first owner, his son, José de Ayala, truly established the city. He founded the "Hacienda del Topo de San Nicolas Tolentino." This area was then known as "Topo de los Ayala" or "Topo Grande." It's important not to confuse it with "Topo de los Gonzalez" or "Topo Chico."
Modern Growth and Development
In recent years, Escobedo has grown a lot. Many new projects have been built, like shopping malls. The "Escobedo Industrial Park" has also expanded. This growth has brought more people and businesses to the area.
Population Changes Over Time
In 2005, the city of General Escobedo had 295,131 people. There were slightly more men (148,835) than women (146,296). At that time, it was the 5th largest city in the state. This meant it had about 7.03% of Nuevo León's total population. The population has continued to grow quickly. This is because of the increase in businesses, new neighborhoods, and industries. Escobedo and Apodaca are two municipalities that have seen the most growth recently.
Sister City Connections
General Escobedo has one sister city. This means it has a special friendly relationship with another city.
