General Urquiza is a small village and a local government area (called a municipality) in the Misiones Province of north-eastern Argentina. It's found near the Paraná River and National Route 12, an important road.
Long ago, several small communities like Puerto Menocchio and Puerto Lapacho were part of General Urquiza. These were mostly along the river. But as river travel became less common, people started moving closer to Route 12. This new area, known as Barrio Industrial, became the main part of General Urquiza. Today, this is where most of the people live.

History of General Urquiza
The municipality of General Urquiza was first created in 1954. It was originally named after Juan Domingo Perón, who was the president of Argentina at that time. The first local government office was in Puerto Menocchio, about 12 kilometers from where the main town is now.
Just one year later, in 1955, the government changed. The municipality was then renamed General Urquiza. This new name honors Justo José de Urquiza, an important general in Argentina's history.
Why the Town Moved
The main part of General Urquiza has been in the Industrial district since 2006. This area grew around a company called Pipoil.
Before, many people lived near the Paraná River. Ports like Puerto Lapacho were very important for moving goods in and out. But over time, river transport became less used. This made people move closer to Route 12. This road connects the town much better with the rest of the province.
Economy of the Area
The people of General Urquiza mainly work in farming and forestry.
Main Farm Products
- Yerba mate: This plant is used to make a popular drink in Argentina.
- Tobacco: Farmers also grow tobacco plants.
- Tea: Tea is another important crop.
- Citrus fruits: Oranges, lemons, and other citrus fruits are grown here.
- Cattle: Raising cattle for meat and milk is also a part of the local economy.
Population Numbers
According to a census taken in 2001, the entire municipality of General Urquiza had 1,335 people living there.
The main village of General Urquiza itself had 247 residents in 2001. This was a small decrease from the 253 people counted in the 1991 census.
