History of the Generali Arena
Building the Stadium in 1925
The stadium was first built in 1925. It was made for a football team called Slovan Wien. This team was part of the Czech community living in Vienna. The stadium was named České srdce, which means "Czech heart."
It became Slovan Wien's new home after they moved up to the top football league. The stadium opened with a special tournament. Teams like Sparta Prague and 1. Vienna FC played there. Slovan Wien won their first official league match at the stadium, beating Hertha 1-0.
Changes Over the Years
During World War II, the stadium was damaged. After the war, the city of Vienna helped fix it up. In 1949, the stadium was ready to be used again by different football clubs.
In 1973, a famous football club, FK Austria Wien, started playing their home games there. They made a deal with Franz Horr, who was a leader in Vienna football at the time. After Franz Horr passed away, the stadium was named after him to honor his work.
Modernizing the Stadium
For many years, FK Austria Wien played in other stadiums while their home ground waited for updates. Big renovations started in 1981. New sections for fans were built over time.
- In 1982, the north stand was built.
- In 1987, the west stand was added.
- The south stand was built in 1999.
- Finally, the east stand was completed in 2008. This stand is where many fan clubs gather.
In 2000, the main office for FK Austria Wien moved to the stadium. The club also signed a long-term agreement. This deal gives them the right to use the stadium for 40 years.
Since 2010, the stadium has been called the Generali Arena. This name comes from a sponsor, an insurance company called Generali.
