Genesee Junction, New York facts for kids

In the early days of Rochester railroading, Genesee Junction was a special place where different train tracks met. It was like a busy intersection for trains! This junction was first located in Chili, NY. It connected the tracks of the West Shore Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad.

What is a Train Junction?

A train junction is a spot where two or more railway lines cross or join each other. Think of it as a giant switchyard where trains can move from one set of tracks to another. These junctions are super important for trains to travel to different cities and deliver goods. They help keep the railway network organized and efficient.

The First Genesee Junction

The very first place called Genesee Junction was a meeting point for two big train companies. These were the West Shore Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad. This busy spot allowed trains from both companies to switch tracks and continue their journeys. It was a key part of the train system in the Rochester area.

Why Did Genesee Junction Move?

Over time, big changes happened in the railroad world. The Pennsylvania Railroad, one of the companies at the first Genesee Junction, joined forces with another huge company called the New York Central. This was a major merger! After this, the Pennsylvania Railroad stopped using its Rochester Branch. Because of this change, the name "Genesee Junction" moved to a new location.

Genesee Junction Today

The new Genesee Junction is located a bit further west. This spot used to be called West Shore Junction. Today, it connects the tracks of the West Shore Railroad (which was part of Penn Central at that time) and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. This new Genesee Junction is still an active and important part of the train network. It helps trains move smoothly through the area, just like its original namesake did many years ago.
