The Genryaku (pronounced Gen-ree-ah-koo) was a special time period in Japanese history. It was a "year name" or nengō, used to mark years, much like we use BC or AD. The Genryaku period lasted from April 1184 to August 1185. During this short but important time, two emperors ruled: Emperor Antoku and Emperor Go-Toba.

The Genryaku era was a time of big changes and important events in Japan.

The Battle of Dan-no-ura

  • April 25, 1185 (Genryaku 2, 24th day of the 3rd month): One of the most famous battles in Japanese history happened during the Genryaku era. This was the Battle of Dan-no-ura. In this huge sea battle, two powerful families, the Taira (also known as the Heike) and the Minamoto, fought against each other.
  • The Minamoto family won this battle, which was a major defeat for the Taira. Sadly, during this battle, the young Emperor Antoku drowned. This event marked a turning point in Japanese history, leading to the rise of the samurai government.

Great Earthquake

  • August 6, 1185 (Genryaku 2, 9th day of the 7th month): A very strong earthquake shook Japan. It caused a lot of damage in the capital city of Kyoto and the surrounding Kinai area.
