Geoffrey Curtis Ralph Peddle was an important leader in the Anglican Church of Canada. He served as a bishop for the Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador from 2014 until he passed away in 2020. A bishop is a senior leader in some Christian churches, overseeing a group of churches called a diocese.
Geoff Peddle's Early Life
Geoff Peddle was born on January 1, 1963, in Bonavista, Newfoundland and Labrador. He grew up in different towns in Newfoundland, including Trinity, Lethbridge, and Whitbourne.
He was a very dedicated student. He earned several university degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from Memorial University. He also studied at Queen’s College and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom.
Geoff Peddle was married to Kathy, and they lived in Mount Pearl, near St. John's. They had two sons named Adam and Benjamin. His brother, Gerald Peddle, also served as a leader in the church as the former Chaplain General of Canada.
Service in the Anglican Church
Geoff Peddle became a priest in the Anglican Church in 1987. Over the years, he served in many different church communities. These included the Parish of Lake Melville, the Parish of Arnold's Cove, and two parishes in Mount Pearl: the Parish of the Ascension and the Parish of the Good Shepherd.
Beyond leading church services, he also held important roles within the diocese. From 2005 to 2009, he was the Diocesan Executive Officer. This role involved managing the day-to-day operations of the diocese. He also served as Provost, Chancellor, and Vice-Chancellor at Queen’s College. This college is a special school in Newfoundland and Labrador where people study to become church leaders.
Geoff Peddle was also a writer. He wrote many academic articles and several books. Some of his notable books include "From Mount Pearl to Mount Sinai," "The Atonement of Jack Fowler," and "The Church Lads' Brigade in Newfoundland: A People's Story." He also wrote about the history of "The Church of England Orphanage in Newfoundland: 1855-1969."
