Geoffrey Frederick Hewitt (born January 3, 1934, died January 18, 2019) was a very important British chemical engineer. He was a professor at Imperial College London, a famous university in the UK. From 1993 to 1999, he held a special position called the Courtaulds Professor of chemical engineering. After 1999, he became an Emeritus Professor, which means he was a retired professor who still kept his title.

Early Life and Career

Geoffrey Hewitt went to Boteler Grammar School in Warrington, England. He studied chemical engineering at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. He earned his first degree there, and then his PhD in 1957.

After finishing his studies, he worked for the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. This organization focuses on nuclear energy. He worked there until 1985. Then, he joined the Chemical Engineering Department at Imperial College London. He became the Courtaulds Professor of chemical engineering in 1993. He retired in 1999 and became an Emeritus Professor. He passed away on January 18, 2019.

Awards and Recognition

Professor Hewitt received many special awards and honors during his life. He was given honorary degrees from two universities: the University of Louvain in 1988 and Heriot Watt University in 1995. An honorary degree is a special award given to someone for their achievements, even if they didn't study there.

In 1984, he became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This is a group of the best engineers in the UK. He also became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1989. This is an even older and more famous group for top scientists.

In 2007, Professor Hewitt received the Global Energy Prize. This is a very important international award for achievements in energy research. He was also the President of the IChemE from 1989 to 1990. This is a professional group for chemical engineers. In 2017, he received the M. M. Sharma Medal from IChemE for his great work.
