Geoffrey Russom studied at several universities. He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Stanford University in 1968. He then received his Master of Arts degree in 1970. In 1973, he earned his Ph.D. from Stony Brook University. For his Ph.D., he wrote a special paper about the original ideas of the scops. Scops were poets and storytellers in Old English times.
After finishing his studies, Professor Russom began teaching. He worked as a professor of English at Brown University. He taught there from 1972 until 2009. Since January 2009, he has been a Professor Emeritus at Brown University.
Professor Russom's main research focuses on very old literature. He studies writings from Old English, Middle English, Old Norse, and Old Irish times. He also looks at how languages like Germanic ones developed. He is especially known for his work on Beowulf, a famous Old English poem. He has written many important books about these topics. Professor Russom is also a member of several important groups. These include the Linguistic Society of America and the Medieval Academy of America.
