Geoffrey Shawn Fletcher, born on October 4, 1970, is an American screenwriter and film director. He is famous for writing the movie Precious. For this movie, he won an Oscar for writing. He was the first African American to win an Oscar for writing a movie script. In 2010, he started directing his first movie, Violet & Daisy, in New York City. This movie came out in 2013.

Early Life and Education
Geoffrey Fletcher grew up in New London, Connecticut. He is one of three children born to Alphonse Fletcher Sr. and Bettye R. Fletcher. His brothers are Alphonse Fletcher Jr. and Todd Fletcher. Geoffrey went to Waterford High School and then to Choate Rosemary Hall.
He later studied at Harvard College, where he focused on psychology. He also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from NYU's Tisch School. While he was a student, he wrote and directed a short film called Magic Markers. This film was shown at different festivals and caught the eye of famous director John Singleton.
Career in Film
For many years, Geoffrey Fletcher worked in different temporary jobs. During this time, he kept writing and directing his own films. Eventually, he became a professor at Tisch and also at Columbia University.
In 2006, a producer named Lee Daniels saw Magic Markers. He then asked Fletcher to write the movie script for the book Push by Sapphire. This book became the movie Precious. Lee Daniels is known for helping artists who are serious about their work. He chose Fletcher after looking at several other writers. A magazine called Variety even named Fletcher as one of the "Ten Screenwriters to Watch."
In 2010, director Doug Liman and Geoffrey Fletcher announced they would work together. They planned to make a movie about the 1971 Attica state prison rebellion. Fletcher said he hoped to help people think about this important event in American history. He also wanted to add to talks about protecting everyone's rights.
