Geoffrey Shawn Fletcher (born October 4, 1970) is an American writer and director for movies. He is most famous for writing the movie Precious. For this film, he won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. This made him the first African American to win an Academy Award for writing. In 2010, Fletcher started directing his first movie, Violet & Daisy, which he also wrote. It came out in 2013.

Early Life and Education
Geoffrey Fletcher was born in New London, Connecticut. He grew up with his two brothers, Alphonse Jr. and Todd. He went to Waterford High School and then to Choate Rosemary Hall.
Fletcher later studied at Harvard College, where he focused on psychology. He also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from NYU's Tisch School. While at NYU, he wrote and directed a student film called Magic Markers. This film was shown at different festivals and caught the eye of director John Singleton.
Career Highlights
For many years, Geoffrey Fletcher worked in various temporary jobs. During this time, he continued to write and direct his own short films. Eventually, he became a professor at Tisch and also at Columbia University.
In 2006, a producer named Lee Daniels saw Fletcher's film Magic Markers. Daniels then asked Fletcher to write a movie based on the book Push by Sapphire. This movie became the critically acclaimed film Precious. Lee Daniels is known for supporting artists who are serious about their work. He considered several writers before choosing Fletcher. Variety magazine even named Fletcher as one of the "Ten Screenwriters to Watch."
In 2010, Fletcher and director Doug Liman announced they would work together on a movie. This film would be about the 1971 Attica state prison rebellion. Fletcher said he hoped the film would help people think again about this important event in American history. He also wanted it to contribute to discussions about protecting everyone's rights.
