George Annesley (born December 4, 1770, died July 23, 1844) was an important British noble and politician. He was known as the 2nd Earl of Mountnorris. For some years, between 1793 and 1816, people called him Viscount Valentia. He was also a member of the Royal Society, a famous group for scientists.

Early Life and Family

George Annesley was the son of Arthur Annesley, who was the 1st Earl of Mountnorris. His mother was Lucy, whose father was George Lyttelton. George went to Brasenose College, Oxford in 1787. This means he started studying there. However, he left in 1789 without finishing his studies or getting a degree.

Becoming a Politician

George Annesley served as a Member of Parliament. This means he was elected to represent people in the British government. He represented the area of Yarmouth (on the Isle of Wight). He held this important job from 1808 to 1810.

An Exciting Trip to India

In 1802, George Annesley went on a big adventure. He traveled to the East with a talented artist named Henry Salt. Salt was his secretary and also drew many pictures during the journey.

They sailed on a ship called the Minerva. Their journey took them to India and past the Cape of Good Hope in Africa. Henry Salt explored the Red Sea area. In 1805, he even visited the high mountains of Ethiopia.

They returned to England in 1806. Henry Salt's amazing paintings from this trip were used in a book. The book was called Voyages and Travels to India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia and Egypt. It was published in 1809 and had three volumes.

Family Life and Legacy

Lord Mountnorris married Lady Anne in 1790. She was the daughter of William Courtenay, who was the 2nd Viscount Courtenay. Lady Anne passed away in January 1835 when she was 60 years old.

Lord Mountnorris himself died in July 1844, at the age of 73. He did not have any sons who lived to become adults. Because of this, when he died, his title of Earl of Mountnorris ended. However, his other titles, like Baronet of Newport-Pagnell and Viscount Valentia, went to a distant relative. This relative was Arthur Annesley, who became the 10th Viscount Valentia.
