Early Life

George Bell was born in Virginia. At that time, many African Americans were forced into slavery. This meant they were not free and had to work without pay. George's wife, Sophia Browning, was also enslaved. She saved money and bought his freedom.

Later, George worked as a carpenter in Washington, D.C. He earned money and bought his wife's freedom too. They both became free people.

Fighting for Education

Even though George Bell could not read or write, he strongly believed in education. He thought all African Americans should have the chance to learn. He became an activist, meaning he worked hard to make this happen.

Starting the Bell School

George Bell teamed up with two other free African American men. Their names were Nicholas Franklin and Moses Liverpool. They had also been enslaved before. Together, they built a one-story school building. This school was called the Bell School. It was in the Capitol Hill area of Washington, D.C.

The Bell School was the very first school for African Americans in Washington, D.C. However, it closed after a few years because it ran out of money.

The Resolute Beneficial Society

George Bell didn't give up. He helped start a group called the Resolute Beneficial Society. This society helped the Black community in Washington, D.C. They supported people with health, education, and even burial needs.

Thanks to the society, the Bell School was able to open again in 1818. This showed how dedicated George Bell and his community were to education.

Death

George Bell passed away in Washington, D.C., in 1843. His work helped many African Americans get the education they deserved.
