The George Bemis House is a special old house located on Chesham Road in Harrisville, New Hampshire. It was built in 1852. This house is a great example of a building style called Greek Revival architecture. It looks very similar to the Elbridge G. Bemis House next door. Because of its history and style, the George Bemis House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it's an important building worth protecting.
What Does the George Bemis House Look Like?
The George Bemis House is found in a quiet, country area east of the small village of Chesham. It sits on the north side of Chesham Road, not far from Chesham Pond. It's a house that is one and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof, which is called a gabled roof. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.
Special Features of the House
A large, single-story section, also with a gabled roof, extends from the right side of the main house. This part is called an "ell." There's a covered porch that runs along the front of this ell and wraps around its side. The main part of the house has three sections on its front. The main door is on the right side. There are two windows in the attic area above.
The corners of the building have flat, column-like decorations called pilasters. The main entrance has windows on either side, known as sidelight windows. Above the door, there's a strong, decorative frame called an entablature, with a slightly pointed top. The ell section has one window that sticks out from its front roof, which is called a gabled dormer.
The History of the Bemis Brothers' Homes
The George Bemis House is one of two houses built in the 1850s for two brothers, George and Elbridge Bemis. These brothers owned a business in Chesham that included a sawmill and a woodworking shop. They were important to the local economy.
These two houses are some of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture from the mid-1800s in Harrisville. They are also important because they show the history of the Bemis family. The Bemis brothers played a big role in the town's business and growth during their time.
